How to calculate cross stitch fabric size
The chart gives you stitches; the fabric count tells you how many fabric threads or Aida squares fit in an inch. The calculator converts those two pieces of information into the physical size of the stitched design, then adds the allowances you choose.
- Enter the chart width and height exactly as listed in the pattern.
- Choose Aida, linen, or evenweave and enter the fabric count.
- Select over 1 or over 2. For linen and evenweave, over 2 uses two fabric threads for each stitch.
- Set your framing and finishing allowance per side, then use the cut size as the minimum fabric rectangle for those settings.
The formula
For over 1, design size = stitches ÷ fabric count. For over 2, design size = stitches ÷ (fabric count ÷ 2). The cut size then adds twice the framing allowance and twice the finishing allowance, because each allowance is applied to both sides of the dimension.
Aida vs. linen and evenweave
Aida is normally counted by its visible stitch squares and is usually stitched over 1. Linen and evenweave are counted by threads per inch, so stitching over 2 changes the effective stitch density. For example, 28-count linen over 2 gives 14 stitches per inch and therefore the same design dimensions as 14-count Aida over 1.
Needle and strand suggestions
The needle size and strand count shown by the calculator are starting points, not pattern rules. Thread thickness, desired coverage, stitch type, fabric, and personal tension can all change what works best. If your pattern or kit specifies a needle or number of strands, follow that instruction.
