1. Set up your calculation

Use your agreed rules. This calculator applies the numbers you enter; it does not decide eligibility, fairness or legal compliance. All amounts are USD. Use a dot for decimals, without commas or currency symbols.

People

Decimal hours: 7.50 means 7 hours 30 minutes. Zero hours receive zero. Up to 100 people; maximum 744 hours per person for the period.

Money: up to $1,000,000 per input. Weights: 0–100. Percentages: 0–100 per row. Up to 2 decimal places; blank values are not treated as zero.

How to calculate a tip pool

  1. Enter the total pool for one shift or period.
  2. Choose hours, weighted hours or fixed percentages by role.
  3. Add people and their hours, then review the payout table and rounding notes.
  4. For weighted pools, compare the result with an hours-only split of the same pool.

Pool versus tip-out

A pool is a known amount divided among people. A tip-out applies your percentages to sales or tips to calculate amounts owed to recipients. The second mode does not automatically feed into the first.

A simple example

A $120 pool shared by three people working 4 hours each gives $40 each by hours. With role weights of 1, 1 and 0.5, the same pool gives $48, $48 and $24. These numbers illustrate the formulas, not recommended weights.

Rounding that stays visible

A $100 pool split equally three ways becomes $33.34, $33.33 and $33.33. The first row gets the tied extra cent. Reordering tied rows can change who gets that cent. Role percentages allocate cents between roles first, then within each role.

Tip pooling FAQ

How do you split a tip pool by hours?

Multiply the pool by each person’s hours divided by the total hours. For example, a $100 pool and hours of 6 and 4 give $60 and $40. The calculator allocates leftover cents so payouts add up to the pool.

How does a points or weighted tip pool work?

Each person earns points equal to hours multiplied by the weight of their role. Divide the pool in proportion to these points. You choose the weights; the calculator does not recommend a policy. A zero weight produces a zero weighted payout.

How are role percentages different from role weights?

Role percentages reserve a fixed share of the pool for each role and must total 100%. Each role’s share is then split by hours among its people. Role weights instead change each person’s points; a role’s total payout then depends on its hours as well as its weight.

Does tip-out use sales or received tips?

Choose the base for each recipient: total sales, received tips or an entered category sales amount. All rules use their original base independently. They are not percentages of the remaining tips, and their percentages do not have to total 100%.

Why can remaining tips be negative?

Sales-based tip-outs can exceed the tips you received. The calculator shows the negative remainder and warns you rather than capping it. Review the amounts and your rules; this result is arithmetic, not a statement about what you are legally required to pay.

How are cents rounded?

For pools, amounts are rounded down first and remaining cents go to the largest fractional remainders, with input order breaking ties. Role-percentage pools do this between roles and then within each role. For tip-out, each independent rule rounds to the nearest cent, with half cents rounded up.

Can I export or save the result?

Copy the report, download CSV or use Print / save PDF. Reports include the method, inputs, payouts and rounding notes. Changing inputs clears the old result. This tool does not save sessions or send your entries to a server.

What is outside this calculator’s scope?

This is a USD arithmetic tool for one shift or period. It does not determine staff eligibility, legal compliance, tax, payroll deductions or fairness, and it does not make payments. It supports at most 100 people, 20 roles and 20 tip-out recipients, with up to two decimal places per numeric input.
