Organize & Check
Random Group & Team Generator
Make teams that respect your rules. Split a list in seconds, or balance levels while keeping people together or apart.
2–200 people · One allocation · No account · Names stay on your device
Who is taking part?
Names with commas stay intact. Duplicate names are separate people. Replacing the list resets levels and rules after confirmation.
Advanced: levels, rules & seed
These settings may be personal. Exports hide levels by default and always omit individual rules.
Levels — optional in Random, required in Balanced
Use 1–5 consistently. Balanced compares average levels rather than team totals. No missing level is filled silently.
Rules that must be satisfied
Together rules combine transitively. Apart applies to the selected pair. Fixed assignments survive changes to team count: remove or reassign an unavailable team explicitly.
Keep together
On desktop, use Ctrl/Cmd or Shift to select several people. Each group counts as one fewer pair than its number of members.
Keep apart
Fixed team
No rules added. Up to 300 distinct together/apart pairs.
Generate new teams uses a new random seed. Reproduce seed uses this exact value and the current inputs. A seed does not prove an impartial draw.
Save or reopen a project
JSON projects include names, levels and personal rules as readable text. Keep them private. Nothing is saved automatically. Imported results are discarded; generate again after import.

Schedule notes
This is one allocation, not a rotation schedule. Changing an input blocks exports until you generate again.
CSV uses commas. If your spreadsheet opens it in one column, import it with comma as the delimiter.
Generate a verified allocation before printing.
Groups with rules you can rely on
For a workshop or classroom, a shuffled list may be enough. For a sports session or project group, you may need two people together, another pair apart, or a participant on a particular team. This generator checks those requirements before offering an export.
If the rules contradict one another, it explains the conflict. If the bounded search runs out without a verified allocation, it says that no result was found; it does not claim your rules are impossible.
Random teams or balanced averages?
Random mode shuffles without using levels. Balanced mode uses your 1–5 levels to compare average levels across teams. With teams of four and three, equal totals can hide unequal averages, so totals alone are not the objective.
For example, levels 5, 4, 3, 3, 2, 2 and 1 can form a four-person team totalling 11 and a three-person team totalling 9. Their averages are 2.75 and 3.00. Totals of 10 and 10 would give averages of 2.50 and 3.33.
Levels are estimates, not objective measures of people. Use the result as an organizer, with appropriate judgment. No personal data is uploaded, and no registration is needed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a list into random teams?
Enter one person per line, apply the list, choose the number of teams and select Generate new teams. Team sizes differ by at most one. Names containing commas stay on one entry; identical names remain separate people.
Are together, apart and fixed-team rules guaranteed?
Every returned allocation is checked against all entered rules. Rules are never silently relaxed. A proven conflict is reported as impossible; reaching the search limit without a result means only that a solution was not found.
How does balancing by level work?
Enter a level from 1 to 5 for every person. The tool first minimizes the gap between average team levels, then a weighted measure of their spread. A larger team may have a larger total level. For large or constrained inputs, a valid result is not necessarily the best possible balance.
Can I reproduce an allocation with a seed?
Yes. Keep the same participant order, levels, rules, settings, seed and algorithm version, then select Reproduce seed. Spaces, Unicode forms and letter case matter. A seed does not prove a draw was impartial: an organizer can try different seeds.
Can I generate pairs or set a maximum team size?
Choose Maximum people per team and enter 2 for pairs. An odd list produces one single-person group. For other maximum sizes, groups are kept nearly equal: 10 people with a maximum of 4 produces sizes 4, 3 and 3.
Are names and private rules saved or shared?
Processing happens on your device. Nothing is saved automatically. Copy, CSV and print hide levels unless you enable them, and do not include personal rules. A downloaded JSON project contains names, levels and rules as readable text; keep it private.
Does this create a tournament or rotation schedule?
No. This creates one allocation into teams or groups. Use Court Rotation Planner for rounds, rotating partners, courts and rest slots.
